British Science Week 2023

To celebrate British Science Week, Upper Academy students participated in experiments and workshops based on the theme ‘Connections’.

Students learned about programming, and successfully created an algorithm to instruct a pretend robot to make a jam sandwich.

STEM experiments, such as chromatography, were completed by our students, focusing on controlling variables, taking accurate measurements and analysing data. Through chromatography, our scientists learned how various components of a dissolved mixture interact with a fixed solid. These activities motivate students to build confidence in practical-based work and designing scientific methods for investigation purposes.

A poster competition was also part of the activities where students created innovative posters on scientific ideas based on the theme ‘Connections’.

Towards the end of the week, students welcomed Dr Ken Farquhar and his Spectacular Entertaining Science Show. Dr Ken demonstrated why jugglers love gravity, how a drill can keep a basketball spinning, and why unicyclists keep moving to stay still. Students discovered how these and other circus skills relate to the world around us.

“I really liked the Science Show, and learned about how gravity works.” Sally.A – Year 10

“The ‘Robot, make me a sandwich’ activity was a very good method to learn how to program.” Cherish.O – Year 10

“I liked how there was a good outcome from the chromatography experiment.” Oliver.T – Year 10
