The purpose of this immersive experience was to provide our historians with a first-hand understanding of the motivations behind Sir Francis Drake's historic circumnavigation and its impact on the early modern world.

Led by a knowledgeable tour guide, students were given a tour of the ship, giving them an understanding of the challenges and dangers, that 16th-century mariners faced. To illustrate the path the ship took during it’s circumnavigation, the tour guide stood on a giant map of the world talking through key point and facts. In addition to enriching their contextual knowledge, there were opportunities for our students to actively participate in the maritime tasks of the 16th century. Several members of the group volunteered to raise the anchor and even simulate the preparations to fire a cannon.

Students will be answering question about Drake's circumnavigation of the globe for the ‘historic environment question’ in their GCSE exams and this visit undoubtedly served as a stepping stone towards their success in their upcoming exams.
