Sixth Form Students Experience Engineering Insights at the House of Lords
A group of Year 12 A Level Engineering students recently had an incredible opportunity to participate in an All Party Parliamentary Engineering Group held at the House of Lords.
During the event, students heard first-hand from world-leading university academics specialising in engineering, AI, and the biomedical sectors.
Our students listened to the guest speakers’ experiences and insights while enjoying a fabulous two-course lunch with stunning views of the Thames.
Students were joined at their table by event host Stephen Metcalfe MP and Shea Toomey from Laing O'Rourke, who shared experiences of pursuing a work-based degree with the company. Also present was John Lavery MVO MBA, Secretary for the Royal Commission of the Exhibition of 1851, who discussed the postgraduate fellowships and scholarships offered by the Commission, emphasising the importance of raising awareness among younger generations about the opportunities in engineering.
After lunch, the students were treated to a tour of Parliament, including the opportunity to watch proceedings in the House of Commons from the viewing gallery. This provided the students with a deeper understanding of both the engineering field and the workings of Parliament.
“Learning that AI is meant to improve workers experiences and efficiency, rather than replacing them, was eye-opening.” Diesel.T – Year 12
“Being part of the parliamentary group was a new definitive experience which showed me perspectives on modern-day engineering and it’s futuristic plans.” Joseph.C – Year 12
“It is fascinating that AI is not viewed as artificial nor intelligent by its creators.” Nicole.I – Year 12
“I am really glad that I had the opportunity to invite some aspiring Year 12 engineers to hear about some of the exciting routes into robotics and the opportunities presented by this fast-growing industry. We discussed the connection between robotics and artificial intelligence, the risks and possibilities, and it was great to hear their views. Many thanks to Ms Bowman for working to make this happen! It is fantastic that Basildon Upper Academy is working to expand students’ horizons and give them insight into the world of opportunity that exists.” Stephen Metcalfe MP
